Great start to the new year for 9th Cubs

24 February 2014

2014-01-08 19.43.51The 9th cub scouts started off 2014 with most of the pack attending the BBC’s ‘Stargazing Live’ event at the Leicester University on Wednesday 8th January.

The evening was really wet – so wet that all the outside activities had to be cancelled. (When I arrived back home I literally had to wring out my socks!) But, never deterred we all turned up and the cubs soon got stuck into all the great activities being run inside the University.

Many of the parents had supported us and so we were able to split up into small groups so that the cubs could get the most out of the evening.

Some of activities the cubs took part in were; the planetarium, experimenting with dry ice, making and firing a rocket, learning about the different types of asteroids plus lots more.

A great evening and one to watch out for another year if anyone is interested.

It made a really good start to the Cub Scout Astronomy Activity Badge, which we completed the following week at our normal cub meeting.

At the beginning of February, 12 cubs attended our first of 3 sessions booked into the Halfords Cycle Workshop. Another fantastic evening.
The cubs were able to learn about the care of their bikes and had hands on experience of checking tyre pressure, changing a wheel, adjusting their brakes, pumping up a tyre, putting a chain back on and mending a puncture – all in the space of 1 ½ hours.
Halfords are sponsoring the Cub Scout Cyclist Activity Badge and you can book in on line. Its all free and the Cub Scouts received a ‘goodie’ bag and certificate at the end of the session.
The rest of the badge will be completed at cub meetings and finish with a bike ride
